Compass — a daily geography game for the whole family

Five real cities a day, easiest to hardest. You know the name — can you find it on the globe?

What it is

Every day Compass gives your circle five real cities, each from a different country, running from household names to ones that will stump the whole table. You are told each city’s name; the challenge is finding it on a spinning satellite globe that carries no labels at all. Each city comes with a fun fact, and the fun fact is never a hint about where it is.

How to play

  1. Spin and zoom the globe, then tap to drop a pin, and confirm it.
  2. You learn how far off you were, in miles or kilometres — but never in which direction.
  3. A ring around your pin shows every place that distance could be. Use it for your second try if you want one.
  4. A pin within 10 miles is a bullseye and finishes that city early.

How scoring works

Each city scores 0–100 on your closer try, so taking the second try never costs you. Within 10 miles is full marks. Beyond that the score falls on a log scale: 250 km off still scores 57, and being twice as far off always costs the same number of points. Your day score is the average of the five cities.

A worked example

An invented example, not a real day’s city.

Say the city is Kraków, Poland. Your first pin lands about 400 km away: 50 points, and a ring appears around your pin. Working from the ring, your second pin lands 40 km away: 86 points. The city scores 86 — your closer try — and it is averaged with the other four for the day.

Why it works across generations

Compass rewards what you know about the world, not how fast you tap. A grandparent who has travelled and a kid doing geography at school are on even footing, there is no timer, and the five cities climb from easy to hard so everyone gets a few they know. On the web you can also aim with the keyboard or by typing coordinates.

How it feeds the family streak

Compass is one of the five scored games in a Streakhouse day, so playing it counts you as having played toward your circle’s shared streak. Everyone gets the same five cities, the leaderboard compares day scores, and the share card lists your five scores with a 🎯 for each bullseye — never the cities themselves.
