Fireside — a daily logic puzzle for the whole family

One flame in every row, column and section of the griddle — and no two flames may touch.

What it is

Fireside is a pure-logic puzzle on a 6×6 griddle split into six irregular sections. Place six flames so that every row, every column and every section holds exactly one, and no two flames touch — not even diagonally. Each day’s board has exactly one solution, and careful reasoning always gets you there. No vocabulary, no trivia, just logic.

How to play

  1. Tap a cell to cycle it: empty, then flame, then ruled out.
  2. Long-press (or right-click on the web) to rule a cell out in one go.
  3. A char mark appears when two flames clash — touching, or sharing a row, column or section.
  4. Stuck? A hint reveals one flame, for 25 points.

How scoring works

Every board has a par time of between about 30 and 75 seconds. Finish at or under par for 100; after that you lose a point for every two seconds over, down to a floor of 20. A hint costs 25 points, and placing a flame where it clashes costs 5, up to 25 in all. Ruling cells out and taking flames back are always free.

A worked example

An invented illustration, not a real day’s board.

Suppose every empty cell left in the second row belongs to the same section. That row still needs its flame, so that section’s flame must be in the second row — which means you can rule out every other cell of the section. Chains of small deductions like that solve the whole board.

On scoring: say par is 50 seconds and you finish in 70, with one clashing flame along the way. Twenty seconds over par costs 10 points and the clash costs 5, so you score 85.

Why it works across generations

Fireside asks for patience rather than knowledge, which makes it the great leveller of the day: a ten-year-old who likes number puzzles can beat everyone at the table. Par is generous, the time penalty is gentle, and the floor means a slow, careful solve still scores.

How it feeds the family streak

Fireside is one of the five scored games in a Streakhouse day, so solving it counts you as having played toward your circle’s shared streak. Everyone solves the same layout, the leaderboard compares scores, and the share card shows your time against par — never the board.
